SPOILERS: Major ones for "Unsafe"

SUMMARY: "I still have my commitment papers from Belle Reve, Clark, if that's what you're looking for in a spouse."

His phone softly purred on the nightstand, the number of his security team glowing in backlit blue. He glanced at the interruption, and rolled onto his back with a sigh. With his father out of prison, it was unlikely to be good news.

"You should get that, Lex." Her fingers crept along his rib cage teasingly, reawakening interest in her wake despite the last two hours of pleasurable action between them.

Lex caught Heike's hand, rubbing his thumb over the rough indentations on her fingertips. She had the face and body of the perfect society wife, except for her hands which bore evidence of a life of holding a foil over holding a wineglass. "We still have a half-hour left on our lesson."

She frowned briefly at his words, looking at the clock. "I stopped billing you for my time the moment you got my gear off." The phone purred again in the wake of silence. "Answer that, I need a shower before I have to be back at the salon."

It was obvious he just succeeded in pissing her off. Again. Lex could survive the weeks he'd undoubtly have to wait until she "found" time her schedule for him again. Everytime he tipped her extra for the lesson, or probed the reasons why she liked his bed, he ended up losing not only the best fencing instructor, but a moderately enjoyable lay.

German women, he doubted he'd ever understand them.

He watched her step from his bed, brazen in her nudity as always, and smiled. Lex could live with that. On the sixth ring, he picked up his phone with a tolerant smile, "what has my father done now? Make KoolAid for a group of hemp wearing followers?"

There was a brief pause, "Sir, this is Lawson, on the Kent detail."

"Report." He reached for his pants, the languid relaxation of sex evaporating into instant tension. Lawson was paid to do two things, find all mentions of the Kents in law enforcement or media outlets for Lex to handle himself, and to keep a watch on people of particular interest to the Kents, enemies or other, that were connected to Clark's secret. For the most part it was easy when most of that group called Belle Reve home, but there were still loose cannons to be watched like Kyle Tippet, or the kid, Bart Allen.

"Alicia Baker has been released from Belle Reve."

"Yesterday morning. She's been deemed cured, and also as a condition of her release, she has a bracelet which intreferes with her ability."

Cured. He'd heard that term thrown around before, especially at Belle Reve. Having been "cured" himself, he had no doubt that translated into powerlessness, not psychological healing. "Has she contacted Clark yet?"

"Yes, sir."

Lex rubbed his forehead, and fished out a fresh shirt from his closet. He noted the shower was still going absently, quashing the slight regret that he couldn't join Heike there. "All right, with her bracelet, she can't abduct Clark. Put someone on Ms. Lang for her protection, just in case Alicia wasn't cured of her dislike."

"Sir, there is more." Lawson took an audible breath. "I found paperwork at the Clark County Courthouse for one Mr. Clark Jerome Kent and one Ms. Alicia Lynn Baker from last night. It's a marriage license, sir."

He sat down hard on his bed. "What?"

"They were married last night at the Double Happiness Wedding Chapel at around 2 a.m. I checked the closest local hotels, and there's a reservation for a Mrs. Alicia Kent at the Best Western Mardi Gras, the clerk confirmed their descriptions as being the newlywed couple that purchased the honeymoon suite."

Clark. Married. Alicia. The words ran together in his head, sometimes with meaning, and sometimes they were just abstract sounds that he's sure had significance to him until they were combined in that sentence.

"Clark is not 18 yet, so he must have used a fake ID. Present evidence to that effect to whoever you need to, and get that marriage certificate ripped up. I don't want any evidence of that marriage happening. Let Double Happiness know they participated in a fraud allowing a minor to marry without notarized parental permission, and then see how much it will take to make them go away."

"Yes, sir. Would you like the release orders on Alicia Baker recinded? It's obvious she used her powers to teleport her and Mr. Kent to Las Vegas. There are no records of either party using an airplane or renting a car. No reciepts for gasoline either. That's grounds for her to be recommited to Belle Reve."

Lex swallowed his instinctive reply of 'yes'. Clark had the ability to run them both to Vegas, even if Lex couldn't think of a reason why he would. If by chance Alicia was found with her bracelet still intact, the trip to Vegas would come into scrutiny, and he was getting really tired of faking plane tickets to cover Clark's superspeed.

"No, Lawson, let's hold off on that until we have more proof. It's possible they took the Kent's truck, and bought gas with cash. Just fix things with Clark County, and let me know what else develops."

"Yes, sir. Thank you, sir." A soft click, and Lawson was gone.

Clark. Married. Clark got married. To Alicia. To a psychopath who's ink on her release papers was still wet. Was that all it took to get past Clark Kent's defenses? If a certificate of insanity was all Clark needed in a mate, well Lex was quite sure he still had one somewhere.

Christ. He was not going to start the 'what's wrong with me, why am I not good enough for Clark Kent' spiral of self-worth questioning. He wasn't. It was scarcely past New Years, he still had a few resolutions intact. 'Do not forgive Father'. 'Do not let Clark Kent lead you around by your dick'. 'Do not sleep with amoral, psychologically unstable women'.

Apparently Clark needed that last resolution more than he did. It made for a nice change. He closed his eyes summoning the memory of the last lecture he'd received from Clark about impulsive sexual relations with women he couldn't trust. There was really nothing like recycling a received lecture, Emily Post didn't mind that sort of regifting around the holidays.

Heike laid a shower-warm hand on his face, startling him. "Bad news?"

"Unexpected news."

"I can see that our earlier workout has been wasted."

Lex covered her hand briefly before standing up, "It's never wasted. I apologize for my earlier remark."

"It was forgotten when I remembered you had six shower heads. Same time next week?" Heike offered, twisting her wet blonde hair into a pony tail.

"How about tomorrow, instead?" He replied, thinking of his upcoming visit to the Kent Farm. Hearing an explanation and a lie from Clark Kent usually put him in the mood to handle his sword, er, foil in enthusiatically aggressive ways. "I have a feeling I'm going need to get some aggression out."

"Bis morgen, Lex."

That was the quickest that any story has died on me. Ever. All it took was watching "Pariah", and I realized I couldn't write this story.

Oh, I'd like to see the continuation of this. Heike offers such rich possibilities for a nonhomicidal playmate for Lex.

Darn it,

this was great. I hate that Pariah killed a really good story like this. I would have loved to see where this was going.

What I really like about this story is Kent Detail. This seems like a great way for Lex to know, care - but not care, and to take care of Clark. That Lex would forge plane tickets is really great.

I will echo the 'too bad no more story'
